So, the worst-kept secret in football was all but confirmed in the wake of Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title win, as Trent Alexander-Arnold confirmed that he would be leaving his boyhood club this summer at the expiry of his contract.
The England international has been with the Reds since he was just six years of age, breaking into the first team as a teenager, and has since gone on to become an anchor in the club’s greatest period of the modern era.
The 26-year-old has professed his love for Liverpool over the years, stating that he wanted to emulate the great Steven Gerrard by remaining with the club throughout his entire career and even becoming captain.
However, over the last 12 months, that rhetoric has changed as the riches of Real Madrid prove to be too much to turn down. Especially following Liverpool’s early Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
Trent Alexander-Arnold Confirms Anfield Departure

After his late winner in the recent clash away at Leicester City, Alexander-Arnold celebrated wildly, triggering some supporters to hope that he would remain at Anfield. Unfortunately, though, that hasn’t come to fruition.
Trent has announced his impending departure, but he hasn’t yet confirmed where he will be headed. Even so, everyone knows that his new home will be the Santiago Bernabeu. Recent reports have suggested that Los Blancos would like to secure the playmaking full-back’s services even before his June 30th contract expiry so that he can take part in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Online sports betting sites have made Real a favourite for glory in that particular showdown in the United States. The latest of Bovada’s sport betting odds currently price the record 15-time European Champions as the +450 frontrunners, and those odds will surely shorten even further should Trent’s services be acquired in time for their opening game against Al Hilal on June 18th.
But while Alexander-Arnold has seemingly secured the transfer of his dreams, unfortunately for the football purists, it’s yet another player who has abandoned their boyhood club.
Remaining with one team for the entirety of one’s career is certainly a respectable move, and here are three superstars who did exactly that.
Paolo Maldini

For over 25 years, Paolo Maldini wore the red and black of AC Milan, but he wasn’t the first man in his family to have played for the club. His father Cesare starred at the San Siro for 12 years throughout the 1950s and 1960s, racking up over 400 appearances in all competitions. But even his achievements would pale in comparison to those of his son.
Paolo Maldini took longevity and loyalty to a whole other level. From the moment he debuted as a teenager in 1985, it was clear that the Rossoneri had unearthed a generational talent. Il Capitano turned out a mighty 902 times, initially breaking into the first team at 16 and playing well into his 40s, before retiring in 2009.
Across those years, he helped Milan lift five Champions League trophies, seven Serie A titles, and countless other honours. In the years since his departure, his affinity with the club has remained.
His son Daniel – a tricky winger rather than a stalwart defender like his old man – came through the Milan youth academy and featured for the first team 24 times before moving to Atlanta on a permanent deal last summer.
Francesco Totti

If Rome is the eternal city, Francesco Totti is its eternal king. Playing for AS Roma wasn’t just a career for the boyhood Giallorossi fan; it was a love affair. From his debut at just 16 years old in 1993 to his controversial farewell in 2017, Totti symbolised everything the club stood for.
The stats are dazzling enough. 786 total appearances, 307 goals, and numerous jaw-dropping assists make Totti one of the most talented and unique forwards the game has seen. But his magic extended beyond the numbers. It was in every audacious chip, every no-look pass, every moment he made the impossible look effortless with a grin on his face.
What makes his story even more astonishing is how easily he could have left. Real Madrid, Galácticos, and all came calling in his prime. Totti said no. “Winning one title with Roma,” he famously declared, “is worth ten with Real Madrid.” That loyalty paid off in 2001 when Roma won the Serie A title, and Totti cemented his place as Rome’s eternal hero.
Carles Puyol

When one thinks of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, they think of the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, and Sergio Busquets. But there was one man who stood above all others when it came to pure heart, and that was Carles Puyol.
The powerful centre back wasn’t the flashiest player on the pitch – not by Catalan standards – but it was his famed curls that led the Blaugrana into battle for each and every week for the better part of 15 years.
He broke into the first team back in 1999, and from then he became captain for the club’s greatest-ever era. Six La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies playing under the likes of Pep Guardiola and Frank Rijkaard represented the greatest run the club had ever been on, and Puyol was imperative to that.
While the aforementioned stars all moved away during the twilight of their careers, Puyol remained in Catalonia until the very end, retiring in 2014, still somewhat close to the peak of his powers.
