Eden Hazard, at his peak, was the kind of player you’d pay just to watch warm up. That close control, the way he could shift direction without breaking stride — it all looked so natural. Then he joined Real Madrid in 2019, and within months, it was obvious something had gone badly wrong.

Eden Hazard’s decline at Real Madrid was caused primarily by a serious ankle injury in late 2019 that required surgery and never properly healed. Over four seasons, he made just 76 appearances and scored seven goals. By the time he retired in 2023 at 32, one of Europe’s most exciting attackers had become a cautionary tale about timing, fragile ankles, and how quickly things can unravel at the highest level.

The question people still ask: what went wrong? His body broke down. That’s the short version. The longer version involves an ankle that never recovered, fitness cycles that kept restarting from zero, and a move to Madrid that came just as his legs were running out of road.

How good was Eden Hazard at Chelsea?

Hazard joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 and became their most important player almost immediately. Over seven seasons, he won two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, an FA Cup, and a League Cup. He was named PFA Player of the Year in 2015 and spent years being mentioned alongside the world’s best attackers.

What separated Hazard from most wingers was his dribbling, and his decision-making. He knew when to take players on, when to recycle possession, and how to win fouls in dangerous areas without looking like he was hunting for them. Defenders couldn’t get near him without picking up a booking. At his best, stopping him legally was almost impossible.

By the time he left in 2019, Hazard had 110 goals and 92 assists in 352 games. His final season was one of his strongest: 21 goals and 17 assists across all competitions. He carried Chelsea to the Europa League and looked ready for the next step. Nobody questioned the timing of the move.

Why did Hazard fail at Real Madrid?

Real Madrid paid around €100 million for Hazard in June 2019. The plan was simple: replace Cristiano Ronaldo’s output and lead the attack. Hazard said publicly he joined Madrid to win the Ballon d’Or. It never came close.

Reports from Spanish media said Hazard arrived overweight. Madrid’s fitness staff weren’t happy. His first season was disrupted by ankle problems. His second season brought more of the same. By his third, he was barely playing. By his fourth, most fans had forgotten he was still there.

In four years at Real Madrid, Hazard played 76 matches, scored 7 goals, and registered 12 assists. He won La Liga and the Champions League, but his contribution to both was marginal at best. The move that should’ve defined his career ended up defining what happens when injuries take over.

What injuries did Eden Hazard have?

Hazard had ankle issues before Madrid, but they became relentless after the move.

The most serious came in November 2019 during a Champions League match against PSG. A tackle from his Belgium teammate Thomas Meunier caused a fibula fracture that required surgery and metal plates. Hazard never got his explosive first step back after that. Everything changed from there.

Meunier later admitted how shaken he was by the incident. Speaking to Belgian newspaper Dernière Heure, he said:

My goal is never to hurt other players. And if there is one player that I don’t want to hurt, it’s Eden.

He also revealed he tried to contact Hazard straight after the game, adding that teammates told him Hazard was “very sore” in the dressing room.

That ankle never truly recovered. Hazard lost the confidence to push off, to change direction sharply, to play on instinct. The explosive first step that defined his game was gone, and once that disappeared, everything else followed.

Between 2019 and 2023, he suffered multiple ankle injuries — fractures, sprains, ligament damage. He also dealt with recurring thigh and hamstring problems. It became impossible to build any sustained fitness.

Real Madrid’s medical team tried everything. But Hazard’s body had absorbed punishment for over a decade. By 28, it couldn’t recover the way it used to. The rehab timing didn’t help either — COVID lockdowns meant he spent months recovering largely on his own after surgery in the United States. When football restarted, he tried to push back to match speed too quickly. His ankle wasn’t ready.

Did Hazard have weight problems at Real Madrid?

Hazard’s playing style always made him a target. He invited contact, dribbled into crowded areas, relied on sharp changes of direction, and put constant stress on his lower body. For years, his frame handled it. Once the ankle went, everything became harder to manage.

Weight entered the conversation early in his Madrid spell, and this time it wasn’t just media speculation. Hazard himself admitted he arrived overweight after the summer break. Speaking to L’Équipe, he was blunt about that period, acknowledging he put on around five kilos during the off-season and summing it up without excuses: “I was not good enough.”

The issue was timing more than discipline. His pre-season was disrupted by injury, his debut came late, and instead of building rhythm, he was already chasing fitness. Hazard later explained that in those first months he felt forced to simplify his game, making safer passes because people expected him to dribble when his body simply wasn’t ready yet.

At Real Madrid, margins are thin and patience is limited. Fitness standards are brutal. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić extended their careers through obsessive preparation. Hazard’s more relaxed approach had worked at Chelsea, where confidence and continuity carried him. In Madrid, in his late twenties, with a compromised ankle and no runway to ease in, it stopped working.

Long injury layoffs only deepened that cycle. When you’re constantly restarting from zero, peak condition becomes almost impossible to reach. By 2022, Hazard was barely featuring even when available. Carlo Ancelotti rarely trusted him, the club had already moved on, and with wages reportedly around €400,000 per week, there was no realistic reset left.

Why did Eden Hazard retire at 32?

Hazard’s been honest about what happened. In interviews after retirement, he said he didn’t have the same hunger once he got to Madrid. The move felt like the end point of his career rather than a new beginning. He also admitted injuries took the joy out of playing and that he’d lost confidence in his body’s ability to hold up.

In October 2023, Hazard announced his retirement. He was 32. His statement was simple:

I have decided to put an end to my professional career. Thank you for your love. Thank you for all these unforgettable moments.

Since retiring, Hazard’s been clear about why he walked away and what he’s doing now. In a podcast interview in mid-2024, he explained his decision:

I left professional football because I didn’t like everything that came with the game anymore. I liked the 90 minutes on the pitch, but not everything else: the travel, the endless training, the media. I’m 34 years old, not 42 like some people think. If I want to be a coach at 50, I have time. Now I can see a lot of things, follow my kids, and take it easy. My three oldest sons play at Rayo Majadahonda. I give them advice, but with total freedom.

He hasn’t returned to football in any official capacity. No coaching badges, no punditry, no club roles. For now, he’s focusing on family and staying away from the demands that made him fall out of love with the game.

What did Hazard win at Real Madrid?

Hazard officially won eight trophies during his time at Real Madrid, even if his role in most of those campaigns was marginal.

Those honours include two La Liga titles (2019–20, 2021–22), two Spanish Super Cups, one Champions League (2021–22), one UEFA Super Cup, one Club World Cup, and the 2022–23 Copa del Rey. On paper, it looks like a decorated spell. On the pitch, it tells a very different story.

The Champions League win in 2022 underlined that contrast. While Karim Benzema, Luka Modrić, and Vinícius Júnior carried Madrid through the knockout rounds, Hazard was a peripheral figure, making just seven appearances in the entire competition.

The Copa del Rey followed a similar pattern. Real Madrid lifted the trophy, but Hazard played just 67 minutes across the whole tournament. The medals went on his CV, but the seasons themselves passed largely without him.

So yes, the trophies count. They always do. But they don’t define his time at the club, and they don’t change the reality of how little influence he had when Madrid were actually winning those titles.
